COVID-19 Has Claimed the Lives of Two Ontario Children Under Six This Week

Two children under the age of six have passed away from COVID-19 this week.

Ava-Mae Abram tested positive for COVID-19 on January 2, and passed away the following day. She was only 5 years old. Her friends and family have set up a Gofundme fundraiser to help with funeral costs.

Five-year-old Ava-Mae Abram and her mother Lindsay Abram.

A second child under the age of four died Thursday of COVID-19, Toronto Public Health confirmed.

Health officials were unable to provide more details due to privacy regulations, but offered their condolences to the family. This marks the second child under the age of six to pass away from COVID-19 in the past week alone.

At this time, children under five are not eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines in Canada.

Despite an increase in child hospitalizations due to the Omicron variant in Ontario, medical experts continue to view COVID-19 as a relatively mild illness for the majority of children, and serious illness is very uncommon in children who contract it.

According to Dr. Eileen de Villa, the Medical Officer of Health for the City of Toronto, the best way to protect young children against the virus is for adults to get vaccinated and follow public health guidelines.
