Quarantine Hotels in Beijing Not Up to Snuff According to Olympic Athletes

Olympians who were forced to isolate at the Beijing Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19 are reporting serious problems with their quarantine conditions.

Team officials from Belgium, Germany and Russia claim their athletes are undergoing Kafkaesque conditions, including no internet access, substandard food, and no training equipment, in the “quarantine hotels” set up by Chinese officials.

Until two consecutive PCR tests prove negative, athletes are kept in these isolation facilities. After that, they can return to the Olympic Village to train with their teams and compete.

Russian athlete Valeria Vasnetsova, posted on Instagram that her stomach hurt after being fed pasta, “orange sauce,” meat and potatoes, for five days straight.

Her Instagram account has since gone private.

German athlete Eric Frenzel, complained of having to confine himself in a small, unhygienic room, with infrequent food deliveries.

After initially testing positive for COVID-19, Belgian athlete Kim Meylemans thought she was being returned to the Olympic Village after finally receiving a negative result. Instead, she boarded an ambulance that brought her to another isolation facility entirely.

After these very public complaints, Olympic organizers scrambled to fix the problems.

Russian officials claim conditions have improved for Vasnetsova.

Meylemans has since returned to the Olympic Village, still under quarantine but now closer to her team.

The moral of the story: Don’t go to China unless it’s absolutely necessary.
