According to Tim Hortons, Your Location Data Is Worth About As Much as a Large Latte and a Honey Cruller

In an effort to settle class action lawsuits alleging privacy breaches, Canadian coffee giant Tim Hortons is providing free drinks and baked goods to customers.

According to privacy watchdogs, the restaurant’s app collected large amounts of sensitive data, including location data from its users, in order to display targeted ads to them.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada found that the app asked users for permission to access location data, but misled users into believing that the data would only be accessed when they were using the app. Rather, users were tracked as long as the device was on.

As part of the proposed settlement, Tim Hortons will offer affected customers one free hot beverage ($6.19 CAD value) and one free baked good ($2.39 CAD value) from any Tim Hortons location in Canada. However, the agreement still needs court approval.

It also agreed to delete any location data collected between April 1, 2019 and September 30, 2020, and will instruct third-party services to do the same.

The proposed settlement will be considered by a Quebec court later this summer.

To get the most out of the settlement, consider getting a large vanilla latte with Silk almond milk, an extra shot of espresso, and whipped topping. The almost 430 calorie drink should run you $6.19 at most GTA Tim Hortons stores.

If you’re feeling peckish, pair your latte with a non-specialty bagel with peanut butter and strawberry jam to get the most out of your free $2.39 baked good.
